Do birth control pills make your hair fall out?

I've been on birth control pills for my PCOS for almost a year now. Lately, I've noticed a lot of hair fall, much more than usual. Could the birth control pills be the reason my hair is falling out, or is it something else?

It is actually quite common to see some hair fall when you change or stop hormonal pills, as our hair follicles are very sensitive to hormone levels. For most women, this is temporary shedding called telogen effluvium. Give it some time, eat a nutrient-rich diet, and keep your doctor updated.

Yes, starting or stopping birth control pills can sometimes trigger hair shedding because of the hormonal shift, especially if you already have PCOS. I experienced some thinning myself, but it usually stabilizes after a few months once your body adjusts. Just be gentle with your hair and discuss it with your gynac.

I started taking these pills three weeks ago and my hairbrush is suddenly full of hair, which is making me really anxious. Has anyone else faced this right after starting? Does it stop on its own or should I ask my doctor to change the brand?

Hormones can definitely affect your hair strength, but you can support it naturally. I suggest massaging your scalp gently with warm coconut oil mixed with a few curry leaves, and eating soaked almonds daily. However, if the hair loss is very severe, please consult your doctor immediately.

Honestly, between my work stress, lack of sleep, and these hormone pills, I am surprised I have any hair left on my head! Yes, the pills can cause some shedding initially. Just try to get some sleep, drink water, and ignore the hair on the floor for a while!
