Do all steroids cause weight gain?

Steroids have been prescribed to me for my autoimmune condition, and I'm really worried about the side effects. My friend who took them earlier gained a lot of weight. Do all types of steroid medications cause weight gain, or does it depend on the specific steroid and dosage?

If it is a short 3-day course, you won't suddenly wake up looking like a balloon! It's mostly long-term use that causes water retention, so don't sweat the small doses.

My physician clearly explained that inhalers or short oral courses have localized effects and rarely cause weight gain. The risk of fluid retention and fat redistribution is primarily linked to high-dose, long-term systemic use.

No, nasal sprays or short creams won't affect your scale. If you are on oral steroids, doing light daily walks and reducing your sodium intake can help manage any temporary water retention.

Absolutely not, it's a huge generalization. Only systemic steroids taken over months typically cause noticeable weight changes; topical creams and sprays don't have that effect.

It depends on the duration. If your doctor has prescribed a short course for an allergy, just complete it without worrying, as the weight won't change in a few days.
