Do all contraceptives cause weight gain?

Considering starting birth control, I'm quite concerned about gaining weight. Many of my friends complain that contraceptives made them put on kilos. Is it true that all types of contraceptives cause weight gain?

Honestly, no, they don't. It's a huge myth that every single pill or patch will make you gain weight. Some people might feel a bit of water retention initially, but it usually settles down soon.

Actually, the effect varies completely from person to person because every body chemistry is different. Some modern low-dose options have very minimal side effects, so it is best to consult your gynecologist to find one that suits your body perfectly.

My aunts used to tell me that these pills cause a lot of health changes and weight issues. But when I spoke to my doctor, she explained that it depends on the hormone levels and suggested a very light one. Trust your doctor on this rather than old stories.

Arrey, don't blame contraceptives for everything, sometimes it is just our slow metabolism and love for samosas! Jokes apart, my wife tried two different brands; one made her feel a bit bloated, but the second one was absolutely fine.

In our times, we didn't have so many pills, we relied on natural tracking. If you are starting these medicines, make sure to drink lots of warm water and fennel tea to help with bloating, but do consult a good lady doctor first.

I have seen this question so many times in our group. The short answer is no, not all of them do. It depends on whether it is progesterone-only or combined, so definitely discuss your concerns with your doctor before starting.

Hey, don't worry! I have been on oral contraceptives for over a year now and my weight hasn't changed at all. Just keep up with your regular walks and eat healthy, you will be absolutely fine.

Honestly, I am too tired managing our newborn to worry about pill weight, but my wife went through this research recently. It is not a rule that you will gain weight, some options actually have zero effect on your scales.

Take a deep breath, it is not a guaranteed side effect at all. Just tell your doctor that you want to avoid weight changes, and they will prescribe something that aligns with your lifestyle. You've got this.

I totally understand why you are worried, I was so scared of starting them because of the fear of gaining weight. But please don't stress, once you talk to your gynaec and get a personalized prescription, you will feel much more at ease.

I was just reading about this on a medical forum yesterday. Apparently, only the Depo shot has a strong link to actual weight gain, while regular pills mostly just cause temporary water retention in some people.

I gained about 3 kgs when I first started the pill, but my doc told me it was just fluid retention, not actual fat. I switched to a different brand with her help, watched my salt intake, and the weight came back to normal in two months.
