Can you take stool softeners during pregnancy?

I'm in my third trimester and have been suffering from really bad constipation. My doctor suggested a stool softener, but I'm hesitant to take anything. Is it generally safe to take stool softeners during pregnancy?

In our days, pregnancy constipation was so common but we managed. Some mild softeners are safe, but always ask your gynecologist first. Don't worry child, this phase will pass smoothly.

Before trying any syrups, try eating soaked raisins or warm milk with a little ghee at night. If the constipation is very painful or severe, it is best to see a doctor rather than taking over-the-counter pills on your own.

My wife is in her second trimester and we were reading about this yesterday. Some specific stool softeners are considered safe because they don't get absorbed much, but we decided to confirm with our doc in the next visit anyway.

When I was pregnant, the doctor gave me a specific stool softener syrup which was very gentle. I only used it when things got really uncomfortable. It worked well for me without any side effects.

I just gave birth last month and honestly, constipation was the worst part. My doctor prescribed a safe daily softener during my third trimester which literally saved me. Definitely ask your gynecologist, they will give you the right name.
