Can you take short term disability for pregnancy?

I'm expecting my first child and want to understand my maternity leave options. My colleague mentioned something about short-term disability for pregnancy. Can I take short term disability for pregnancy here in India?

Yes, many corporate policies allow short term disability or maternity leave for pregnancy to let your body heal. Taking this time to rest, breathe, and practice gentle recovery is so essential. Please check your company's HR policy early so you can plan a peaceful transition.

My health and work tracker apps always emphasize planning your maternity leave well in advance. In India, the Maternity Benefit Act covers 26 weeks of paid leave, which serves a similar purpose. Check with your HR to see if they have additional corporate short-term disability insurance.

When my daughter was pregnant, she took maternity leave under her office policy which was a lifesaver because she had severe morning sickness. It is very practical to secure these benefits early. Talk to your HR department to understand what documents you need from your doctor.

I really struggled emotionally and physically during my third trimester and felt so guilty about wanting to stop working early. Please know that your feelings are completely valid and taking leave is your right. Definitely look into your company's disability or maternity benefits to give yourself a break.

I researched my company's benefits thoroughly during my pregnancy. Depending on your organization and location, pregnancy is often covered under short-term disability if you face specific medical complications. My doctor gladly provided the necessary medical certificates to submit to my HR.

Please do not push your body to the limit just to save your leaves. I ignored severe fatigue and swelling near my due date, trying to work till the last day, and ended up with sudden high BP. Get a checkup and apply for your leaves or disability support the moment your doctor advises rest.
