Can you take a laxative during pregnancy?

I'm in my first trimester and have been struggling with a bit of constipation lately. I usually take a mild laxative when this happens, but I'm worried about pregnancy. Is it safe to take a laxative during pregnancy?

Pregnancy constipation is no joke, especially when you are craving all kinds of spicy street food but your stomach says absolute no! Don't just pop any over-the-counter laxative though. Some can cause cramps, so ask your doc for a safe fiber syrup instead.

My wife faced this during her pregnancy while we were also managing her gestational diabetes with strict diets. Her doctor advised against generic laxatives because some contain added sugars or artificial sweeteners. It is always safest to get a prescription for a mild, pregnancy-safe stool softener.

I feel you, pregnancy constipation is literally the worst. You shouldn't take regular stimulant laxatives as they can cause uterine contractions. My doc prescribed a mild lactulose syrup which was very safe, so please call your gynaecologist first.

Yes, but only the ones your doctor approves! I was told to drink lots of water and eat prunes first, and then doctor gave me a safe syrup. Take care and stay hydrated!

It is best to treat the body gently during this sacred time. Try warm milk with a little ghee at night, or soaked figs in the morning first. If that doesn't help, seek your doctor's advice before taking any medicinal laxatives.

I completely understand how scary it is to take any pill when you are pregnant, I used to double-check everything twice. Please don't take normal medical store laxatives on your own. Call your gynaecologist's assistant and they will suggest a safe option over a quick phone call.
