Can you smoke during pregnancy?

My sister is pregnant, and she used to smoke occasionally before. Now she's asking if it's absolutely necessary to quit completely, or if a very small amount is okay during pregnancy. I told her to ask a doctor, but she wanted to know generally.

As someone who hasn't slept properly in two years thanks to my toddler, I can tell you parenting is tough—but smoking during pregnancy is an absolute no-go. The chemical exposure is bad for the baby's development. You'll need all the lung capacity you can get for the sleepless nights ahead!

Listen, please don't smoke at all during these nine months. I know coping with cravings or stress is hard, but it's really unsafe for the little one. Don't stress too much, just talk to your doctor about safe ways to quit.

Oh God, please don't do this. I read so many scary articles about developmental issues and sudden infant death syndrome related to smoking. It's so stressful to think about, please seek help from a counselor or doctor to stop safely.

Nahi beta, bilkul bhi nahi. Smoking makes the baby very weak inside the womb. For the sake of your child's long life and health, please stay away from cigarettes and eat good, fresh food instead.

At Kokilaben Hospital, the doctors make it very clear from day one that smoking of any kind is extremely harmful during pregnancy. Please ask your gynaecologist clearly about nicotine replacement options if you are struggling to quit.

Absolutely not. Smoking during pregnancy restricts oxygen supply to the baby and can lead to premature birth or low birth weight. There is zero room for compromise on this, so you need to stop immediately for the child's sake.
