Can you have fatty liver without drinking alcohol?

I just got my medical reports back, and the doctor said I have fatty liver. I was really surprised because I hardly ever drink alcohol, maybe once in a blue moon. I thought fatty liver only happened to heavy drinkers, so I'm confused. Can you get fatty liver even if you don't consume alcohol?

Yes, it is called Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Please don't listen to people online telling you that drinking warm water with lemon or random herbal juices will cure it. Go to a gastroenterologist, get an ultrasound, and follow scientific medical advice.

Haan, it is very common even in teetotalers. I tried all sorts of home remedies like methi water and amla juice, which are good for general health, but the real change only happened when I cut down on deep-fried food, white rice, and walked daily. It takes practical lifestyle changes.

Yes, absolutely. Many vegetarians get fatty liver because of a high-carb diet full of maida, sugar, and excess potatoes. Try to reduce your simple carbohydrates, add more fiber-rich green vegetables, and use very little oil in your daily cooking.

Definitely. Most middle-aged Indians get this due to our oily food and sedentary desk jobs. You don't need to join an expensive gym; just start walking for 45 minutes every evening and stop eating sweets and bakery items. It is highly reversible.

Yes, I was diagnosed with NAFLD during a master health checkup at a major hospital. My specialist explained that insulin resistance and high cholesterol are often the main culprits. I highly recommend discussing your lipid profile and liver function tests clearly with your physician.

I totally understand how shocking and scary it feels to see 'fatty liver' on your ultrasound report when you don't even drink. I cried for two days when I saw mine. But please know it is extremely common and very manageable once you start a basic routine.

I was diagnosed with grade 2 fatty liver last year, and I have been a strict teetotaler all my life. My doctor told me it was purely due to my high sugar intake and sitting all day at work. I cut down my tea-sugar and started taking the stairs, and my levels have improved.

Yes, it is very possible. Please don't feel bad or think you did something wrong. With simple dietary changes and regular light exercise, your liver health can improve significantly.

Yes, simple sluggish digestion and excess weight can cause fatty liver in non-drinkers. Drinking warm water throughout the day and eating light dinners can help. However, if you feel any persistent pain in the right side of your stomach, please consult a doctor immediately.

Yes, beta, this is very common now. I have seen so many people in this forum get surprised by a fatty liver diagnosis despite never touching alcohol. Just focus on losing a little bit of weight gradually, eat home-cooked meals, and don't worry too much.

Yes, you can get it. In our times, we ate heavy ghee but also did hard physical work. Today's lifestyle is very different. You can drink warm water with a little bit of fresh ginger or garlic in the morning, but most importantly, you must avoid sweets and heavy fried foods.

Yes, it's called NAFLD. If you want to track it without spending too much, just look for a basic liver function test (LFT) and an abdominal ultrasound at a local laboratory. They usually offer these in a combo pack for around 1000 to 1200 rupees.
