Can you get postpartum during pregnancy?

I'm expecting my baby in a few months, and lately I've been feeling very low and tearful, more than the usual pregnancy emotions. My sister mentioned 'postpartum'. Can you get postpartum feelings or issues even during pregnancy?

Listen, postpartum literally means 'after giving birth', so you cannot get it during pregnancy. But if you are talking about depression or extreme anxiety, yes, that can start before delivery. Don't ignore it, go see your doctor.

If you are feeling depressed during pregnancy, please budget for therapy sessions or talk to your government hospital doctor, as it is highly affordable there. Don't let it worsen, because managing it early is much better for your health and wallet.

I understand your confusion, the terms can be so overwhelming when you are already feeling anxious. While postpartum is for after delivery, prenatal depression happens during pregnancy and feels very similar. Your feelings are valid, please seek help.

Postpartum during pregnancy is like having your dessert before the main course—technically impossible! But jokes apart, if you are feeling very sad or worried now, it is prenatal depression. Definitely let your OB-GYN know at your next visit.

Technically no, postpartum refers to the period after birth. However, mental health struggles like prenatal depression can definitely strike during pregnancy. Just like managing BP, keeping a close eye on your mental state with regular checkups is vital.

Our elders often tell us to stay happy during pregnancy so the baby is healthy, but sometimes hormonal changes cause deep sadness instead. This is prenatal depression, not postpartum. Please trust your doctor and discuss this in your next scan visit.
