Can you get dandruff from not washing your hair?

My friends tease me sometimes for not washing my hair every day. I try to wash it every other day, but sometimes it's longer. Can you actually get dandruff just from not washing your hair often enough?

Oh absolutely, I've noticed this myself during busy weeks when I skip hair washes! The natural oils and sweat build up on the scalp, which makes a perfect home for the dandruff fungus. Try washing your hair at least twice a week, it really helps keep the scalp clean.

I used to think leaving oil in my hair for days would nourish it, but it actually made my dandruff much worse. If you don't wash regularly, the buildup causes itching. Try a mild diluted lemon rinse or curd pack once a week, but the main thing is regular cleansing.

In our days, we washed our hair regularly with shikakai to keep the dirt away. Not washing allows dirt and sebum to accumulate, leading to scaling of the scalp. You can apply a little lukewarm coconut oil mixed with camphor before your wash, but do keep the head clean.

For me, skipping washes for more than three days always triggers itching and white flakes. Everyone's scalp is different though, so what happens to me might not happen to you. I just stick to a regular routine that works for my hair type.

Yes, oil buildup is a big reason for flakes. I usually apply aloe vera gel to soothe my scalp before washing it off with a mild herbal shampoo. But if your scalp is very red or bleeding from scratching, please consult a dermatologist instead of trying home tips.

While poor hygiene can definitely worsen flaking due to oil accumulation, true dandruff is often linked to a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia. If regular washing with a normal shampoo doesn't clear it up in two weeks, it's best to consult a dermatologist for a medicated ketoconazole shampoo.
