Can you get a wrong positive pregnancy test?

I got a positive result on a home pregnancy test this morning, but I'm feeling really confused and a bit skeptical. A friend told me sometimes these tests can show a 'false positive'. Is it actually possible to get a wrong positive pregnancy test?

I actually had a false positive once because I read the test kit way past the recommended ten minutes, and a faint evaporation line appeared. My doctor later explained that timing is everything with these home tests.

Please don't rely only on home kits or ignore unusual symptoms. My wife had confusing test results once which we ignored, and it turned out to be an ectopic issue that needed urgent care. Go to a lab and get a proper beta-hCG blood test done.

My partner had a false positive result a few months back. It turned out the test kit was expired, which we didn't check beforehand. A blood test at the clinic confirmed she wasn't pregnant, so definitely double-check the expiry date.

My gynecologist told me that true false positives are very rare but can happen if you are on certain fertility medications containing hCG, or if you have a chemical pregnancy where the egg fertilizes but doesn't implant. It is best to get a quantitative blood test to be absolutely sure.

Don't go by what people say on online forums or try random home tricks to confirm. False positives can happen due to chemical pregnancies, medical conditions, or faulty kits. The only reliable way to know is a proper blood test and ultrasound by a gynecologist.
