Can you eat seaweed during pregnancy?

I sometimes enjoy sushi and salads that include seaweed. Now that I'm pregnant, I'm unsure if it's safe to continue eating seaweed, or if there are any potential risks.

Seaweed can be high in iodine, haan na. So eating too much might not be good for the baby's thyroid. It is better to have it only once in a while in very small amounts, or just ask your doctor before eating sushi sheets.

When my wife was expecting, we consulted a senior clinical nutritionist at Fortis. She told us to be extremely careful with seaweed because iodine levels can vary wildly and affect fetal thyroid development. Please check with your obstetrician before adding any seaweed products to your diet.

I would be too scared to try seaweed during pregnancy because of all the talk about heavy metals in marine plants. Even if people say it is fine, the constant worrying is not good for you. Maybe just avoid it for these few months to be completely stress-free?

I agree with the caution. It is best to avoid eating seaweed regularly because of the heavy metals and high iodine content.

Hey, don't stress too much! Having a little bit of seaweed soup or a sushi roll once in a blue moon is usually totally fine, but don't make it a daily thing. Just enjoy your pregnancy and keep your doctor in the loop about what you are eating.

Even when managing gestational diabetes or thyroid, you have to be very precise with what you eat. Seaweed might seem healthy and low carb, but the high iodine can interfere with your thyroid health. It's safer to stick to tried-and-tested green leafy vegetables.
