Can you eat clam chowder during pregnancy?

My husband made some delicious clam chowder for dinner. I know some seafood is restricted during pregnancy, so I wanted to check if this dish is safe for me.

I know how hard it is to manage cravings, but seafood can be tricky. If you must have clam chowder, make sure it is cooked boiling hot at home to kill all bacteria. Personally, I stuck to warm ginger water and home-cooked soups to satisfy my savory cravings safely.

Honestly, shellfish like clams are high-risk during pregnancy due to bacteria and heavy metals. Don't rely on random advice on the internet saying it's fine. It is much safer to directly ask your gynecologist if this is okay for your specific health.

When I was pregnant, I wanted seafood constantly, but clams can sometimes carry foodborne illnesses. I decided it wasn't worth the stress for me or the baby. If you do eat it, ensure the restaurant uses fully pasteurized cream and fresh, well-cooked clams.

My sister was craving this last year during her pregnancy. Clam chowder is okay only if the clams are thoroughly cooked and not raw at all, but she decided to skip it just to avoid any tension. Better to go for a nice hot cream of mushroom soup instead, simple and safe!

Apart from the seafood risk, ready-made canned clam chowders can be incredibly high in sodium, which isn't great for your blood pressure. I always had to monitor my BP closely during my pregnancy. Do keep track of your regular checkups and monitor your salt intake.

Please be very careful with shellfish. I once ignored mild stomach pain after eating seafood, thinking it was just gas, and ended up with severe food poisoning. If you eat clam chowder and feel even slightly sick, go straight to the clinic without waiting.

I had a very difficult pregnancy with complications, so I became extremely cautious about what I ate. Shellfish can carry harmful bacteria that are risky for the baby. Please consult your doctor before eating clams or any seafood, it is better to be safe than sorry.
