Can weightlifting cause weight gain?

I've started weightlifting regularly to build muscle and get stronger. My trainer says I might see my weight go up initially. Can weightlifting actually cause weight gain, even if it's muscle?

Sometimes when you start heavy lifting, the scale goes up due to muscle growth or water retention. However, if you are experiencing sudden, unexplained weight gain, do get your thyroid checked just to rule out any hormonal issues.

Yes, muscle is denser than fat so the scale might go up. Don't worry, you are just getting stronger.

Lifting weights can build muscle which increases your body weight, which is very natural. Along with strength training, practicing daily pranayama helps regulate your metabolism and keeps your mind calm about scale changes.

Haan na, starting mein gym jaane se body thodi heavy lagti hai aur weight badh jata hai. It's just muscle and water, panic mat karo, thode dino mein body shape mein aane lagegi.

Honestly, this happened to me too when I first started lifting! I panicked seeing the scale go up by 2 kgs, but my trainer explained it's just muscle density and water retention. Keep lifting, you'll actually look leaner.

Yes, muscle gain and temporary water retention can show as weight gain. Focus on how your clothes fit rather than just the weighing scale.
