Can weight gain cause plantar fasciitis?

My heels have been hurting badly, especially first thing in the morning. My physiotherapist said it might be plantar fasciitis and asked if I've gained weight recently. Can extra weight really be a cause for this foot pain?

I totally get it, that sharp heel pain first thing in the morning is absolutely unbearable. Gaining weight puts sudden, extra pressure on your foot arch. Please wear cushioned slippers even inside the house.

I just recovered from this! I gained 8 kgs rapidly and my heels started throbbing. What saved me was using orthotic insoles, rolling my foot over a frozen water bottle, and slowly losing that extra weight.

Yes, beta. When our body gets heavier, our poor feet have to carry all that load and they start hurting. Dip your feet in warm water with rock salt in the evening, it will give you some peace.

I panicked and thought I had a bone spur in my heel when the pain started after I put on weight. My physiotherapist reassured me it was just plantar fasciitis due to the extra load. Some calf stretches and proper shoes resolved it completely.

I know how scary it feels when you can barely take a step without sharp pain, and you start overthinking about permanent nerve damage. It is a very common issue linked to weight gain. Don't worry, it is treatable.
