Can underactive thyroid cause weight gain?

Lately, I've noticed that I'm gaining weight quite easily, despite not changing my diet much. My doctor suggested getting my thyroid checked. Can an underactive thyroid cause weight gain like this?

Yes, an underactive thyroid slows down your metabolism, which commonly leads to weight gain and water retention. However, before assuming it is just thyroid, please get a proper TSH blood test done to be absolutely sure and safe.

Yes, it causes weight gain, but don't waste money on expensive gym memberships or fancy diet plans yet. Get a basic thyroid profile test done first, which costs around 300 to 500 rupees. Once your hormones are balanced, managing your weight will be much easier and cheaper.

Absolutely! It's like your body's engine decides to go on a slow-motion strike, so even looking at a gulab jamun feels like it adds two kilos! Don't beat yourself up about the weight, just get that little daily pill sorted with your doctor.

My underactive thyroid makes sure that even my morning walks are no match for my slowly growing tummy! It's a very common struggle as we get older, but getting the right medication dose really helps keep the weight from spiraling.

I have seen so many people in this community struggle with sudden weight gain due to hypothyroidism. It is mostly water and salt retention because of a slow metabolism. Don't worry, once your doctor starts you on the right dose of thyroxine, your weight will gradually stabilize.
