Can ulcerative colitis cause weight gain?

I've been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis recently, and I'm a bit worried about managing my weight. Some conditions cause weight loss, but I was wondering, can ulcerative colitis actually cause weight gain instead?

I always worry about every weight fluctuation, and yes, weight gain can actually happen with UC, mostly because of the steroids like prednisone that doctors prescribe during flares. It makes you hold water and increases your appetite like crazy. Don't stress too much about the scale right now, your gut healing is way more important!

While UC typically causes weight loss, weight gain is a very common side effect of steroid treatments like Prednisolone. In my experience, the extra water weight and intense cravings go away once you taper off the steroids under your doctor's supervision. Focus on eating nutrient-dense, low-sodium foods to help manage the bloating.

Steroids for UC flares can cause weight gain and also spike your blood sugar levels significantly. Since I manage diabetes, my doctor had to closely monitor my diet and insulin when I was on steroids. Please consult your physician to safely balance your blood sugar and diet if you are facing similar issues.

Yes, steroid medications for UC are notorious for causing weight gain and bloating. Since you have to be careful with fiber during flares, managing weight can be tricky. I try to eat simple, non-greasy home-cooked meals like bottle gourd (lauki) soup and soft rice to stay nourished without adding extra strain or empty calories.

Yes, it can cause weight gain, primarily as a side effect of steroid medications used to control the inflammation. Once the medication dosage is reduced by your doctor, your weight should gradually return to normal.
