Can too much iron cause hair loss?

My blood tests showed low iron, so I started taking iron supplements. My hair fall has always been an issue, but it feels like it's gotten worse since starting the supplements. Can too much iron actually lead to hair loss?

Yes beta, too much of anything is bad. While iron deficiency is a well-known cause of hair fall, having excess iron in the body (hemochromatosis) also stresses the system and damages hair follicles. It's always best to check your serum ferritin levels before starting any iron tablets.

Absolutely. High iron levels cause oxidative stress which can lead to hair shedding. Don't take multi-vitamins with heavy iron content unless you have a proven deficiency on your lab reports.

I made the mistake of self-medicating with iron pills for months because of hair fall. My hair loss actually got worse, and my blood report showed dangerously high ferritin. I had to stop the tablets immediately and drink green tea to help reduce iron absorption.

My elders always suggested eating curry leaves and beetroot for hair health, which are natural and safe. But when it comes to taking high-dose iron tablets, our family doctor says it can overload the liver and trigger hair fall. Please get a proper blood test done first.

I didn't know this was possible, I thought iron was only good for hair growth. Does this mean eating too much spinach and apples can also cause hair fall, or is it only a problem with tablets?
