Can tight hips cause knee pain?

I started cycling recently and my knees have been hurting, especially the inner side. Someone in my yoga class told me that tight hips can affect the knees. Is there any truth to this connection?

At my age, my hips are so tight they could hold a coin! And yes, they absolutely transfer all that pressure down to my poor knees. A few gentle leg rotations and a doctor's visit keep me going.

I totally understand how scary it is when your knees start hurting out of nowhere. But please don't panic, it is often just tight hip muscles throwing off your leg alignment. Try some gentle hip opening stretches.

My grandmother recommended massaging my joints with warm oil, which did soothe the stiffness. However, our family doctor explained that tight hips throw off knee tracking, so I advise getting a proper checkup.

In my experience, my IT band and hips get very tight after long drives, which immediately triggers a dull ache on the outside of my knee. Stretching my hips always resolves the knee discomfort for me.

Yeah bro, definitely. When my hips were tight from sitting all day in office, my knees had to rotate weirdly during runs, which caused bad knee pain. Foam rolling my hips completely fixed it for me.
