Can tight calves cause knee pain?

I'm a regular runner, and lately I've been getting some nagging pain in my knees, especially after my runs. My calves often feel very tight. Could tight calf muscles actually be contributing to my knee pain?

Oh my god, I panicked so much last year thinking I had some major knee ligament tear! Turns out my calves were just super stiff from sitting all day. Once I started foam rolling my calves, the knee pain vanished completely.

Don't stress, this is actually very common. When your calf muscles are tight, they pull on your joints and mess up your knee alignment when you walk. Try some gentle calf stretches on a step, but don't push yourself if it hurts too much.

Yes, tight calves are a major culprit behind knee pain because they limit ankle mobility. I always suggest people do a simple wall stretch for their calves twice a day. If the pain persists for more than two weeks, please see a physiotherapist.

Massaging your legs with warm mustard oil can really help loosen up tight calf muscles and relieve knee stiffness. However, if your knee is swollen, red, or you cannot put weight on it, please see a doctor immediately.

Yes, tight muscles can affect your gait and cause knee pain. Make sure you also check your vitamin levels and keep your blood sugar in control, as poor circulation from diabetes can sometimes make muscles stiffer.

Actually yaar, I had the same issue after I started running again. My calves were so tight they were literally pulling my knee joint. Just do some basic stretching after your workouts, it makes a huge difference.

I've been having this dull ache under my kneecap and noticed my calf muscles feel like rocks. Did anyone else feel like their knee pain got better after stretching their calves, or should I be worried about something else?

Yeah, definitely. Tight calves restrict how your ankle moves, which forces your knee to take all the extra load. I started stretching my calves daily before my football games and my knee pain went away in a week.
