Can surgery cause hair loss?

My cousin had a major surgery a few months ago, and ever since, he's noticed a lot more hair falling out. He's quite worried about it. Can having a surgery cause temporary or even long-term hair loss?

Hey, don't stress too much! It is actually super common to lose hair after a major surgery because of the physical stress and anesthesia. It is just temporary and your hair will definitely start growing back in a few months once your body recovers.

Yes, the stress of surgery and anesthesia can cause hair shedding. Since our body's healing capacity is linked to sugar levels, make sure you maintain a healthy, low-glycemic diet rich in proteins to help both your body and your hair roots recover faster.

Oh my God, yes! I was so anxious when clumps of my hair started falling out three months after my appendix surgery. It turned out to be stress-induced hair loss, and though it is terrifying, it does stop once your system calms down. Sending you lots of strength!

I had knee surgery three months ago and now my hair is falling out like crazy every time I shower. I am feeling really worried. Has anyone else gone through this exact same thing after their surgery, and how long did it take to stop?

Yeah, my roommate had a major surgery last year and his hair got super thin after that. He got really stressed but the doc said it is just a normal reaction to anesthesia. His hair is totally back to normal now, so chill!

I didn't know surgery could affect hair like this, actually. I have an upcoming minor procedure next month and I'm a bit scared now. Is there any way we can prevent this hair loss beforehand, or do we just have to wait for it to happen?

This condition is called telogen effluvium, triggered by anesthesia and surgical stress. I faced this after my gallbladder removal. My advice is to avoid harsh chemical treatments or tight hairstyles right now, focus on iron and protein-rich foods, and give it 3 to 6 months to self-correct.
