Can stress cause rapid weight loss?

I've been under extreme emotional stress for the past few months, and I've noticed significant weight loss without trying. My family is worried. Is it possible that severe stress can cause rapid weight loss?

Stress can kill your appetite completely. If you are a vegetarian, make sure you are still getting calorie-dense foods like almonds, paneer, and bananas so your body doesn't lose muscle. But do monitor this weight drop carefully.

Yes, high stress can absolutely cause rapid weight loss because it spikes your metabolism. It is quite common.

I just went through this last month during my job switch. I lost 4 kgs in three weeks because my stomach was constantly upset from anxiety. I started meditating and having small khichdi meals, and my weight has finally stabilized now.

Please be careful with rapid weight loss. I ignored it thinking it was just work stress, but it turned out to be a severe gut infection that became complicated. Get a proper checkup done to be safe.

Bro same, during semester exams I literally stop feeling hungry and lose like 3 kgs in a week. It is just exam stress ruining my appetite. Try to drink milkshakes or juices if you can't eat solid food.

Drinking warm milk with honey at night can help calm your nerves and add some gentle calories. However, if you are losing weight very rapidly without trying, please consult a doctor to rule out any underlying health issues.

At 55, I wish my stress caused weight loss, but it usually does the opposite for me! Jokes apart, sudden weight loss is something you should discuss with a doctor just to ensure your body isn't under too much strain.

Please check your thyroid levels once. I blamed my rapid weight loss on my divorce stress, but a routine blood test showed I had hyperthyroidism triggered by that stressful period. Regular tests are highly recommended.

Honestly, I lost 5 kgs in two weeks when my mom was sick, and I panicked thinking it was some disease. But my doctor reassured me that high anxiety burns calories very fast. Once things settled, my weight came back to normal.

Beta, during my younger days when my business was failing, I became half my size because of stress. The body reacts strongly to mental worry. Eat well, sleep, and don't take life's problems too heavily.

I totally get it, seeing the scale drop so fast can be so scary when you are already feeling anxious. Sometimes our body goes into fight-or-flight and we just forget to eat. Please try to take small, frequent meals.

Any sudden or unexplained weight change needs medical evaluation. Even if you think it is just stress, it is always safer to visit your physician and get basic blood work done to rule out other medical conditions.
