Can stopping birth control cause weight gain?

I just stopped my birth control pills because my husband and I are planning to start a family. My friend warned me that I might gain weight after stopping them. Is it common to put on weight after discontinuing birth control?

It can happen due to water retention and hormonal fluctuations when you stop. Try to keep yourself active with regular brisk walking for 30-40 minutes daily, if your doctor says it is okay. Keeping your body moving naturally helps manage these sudden metabolic shifts.

Omg yes, I thought I was the only one! I stopped my pills last semester and suddenly gained like 3 kgs out of nowhere. Actually, my doctor told me it is mostly just water weight and appetite changes because of hormones. It eventually settled down after a few months.

With PCOS, stopping the pill can sometimes bring back the original symptoms like irregular periods and weight gain. It is hard to say if the weight gain is directly from stopping the pill or just your body's natural hormones returning to their baseline. Please speak with your gynecologist to manage the transition smoothly.

I am also planning to stop my birth control pills soon and I am quite scared about the side effects. Does the weight gain happen immediately, or does it take some weeks to show? I would really appreciate if anyone who went through this could share.

Any sudden weight change after stopping medication should not be ignored. It could be due to hormonal imbalance, thyroid changes, or fluid retention. It is always safest to consult your doctor and get a basic health checkup done to find the exact reason.

Hey, don't worry too much about this. Your body is just adjusting to managing its own hormones again, which can cause temporary changes in weight and appetite. Give yourself some grace and time to heal. If the weight gain feels too sudden or is accompanied by other symptoms, just have a quick chat with your doc.
