Can sleep cause weight gain?

Sleeping a lot more than usual lately, sometimes 9-10 hours a day, has left me feeling very tired. Despite no major changes to my diet, I've noticed some weight gain. Could getting more sleep actually be making me put on weight?

Actually, too much sleep or sitting idle can slow down metabolism, but usually, it is the lack of proper sleep that causes weight gain in kids and adults. My son was sleeping very late and gaining weight. Once we fixed his routine, things improved. Please monitor your sleep timings.

If you sleep too much, you miss moving around, but honestly, staying awake late is the real culprit because of those midnight Maggi cravings! When I sleep on time, I don't eat junk. So yes, bad sleep patterns definitely mess up your weight.

Excessive sleep over 9 hours or sleeping less than 6 hours both disrupt your endocrine system. My doctor explained that it alters leptin and ghrelin levels, which control satiety and appetite. It is best to stick to a consistent 7-8 hour sleep schedule for stable health.

I read so many articles about this because I was worried my weekend sleep-ins were making me gain weight. It's so confusing! But I think a irregular sleep cycle definitely affects our hormones. Try to keep it consistent, I hope you feel better soon.

Oversleeping can make you lazy and reduce your daily activity level, which leads to weight gain. If your health permits and your doctor has cleared you, try adding a brisk 30-minute walk every morning. It regulates both your sleep and your weight beautifully.

I recently went through a phase where I was sleeping 10 hours but still felt exhausted and kept gaining weight. It turned out to be a thyroid issue, not just the sleep itself. Do get a basic blood test done to see if everything is alright.

In our old days, we believed waking up with the sun kept the body light and healthy. Sleeping too much in the day causes lethargy and weight gain. Try having a cup of warm fennel tea in the evening to digest food better and sleep on time.
