Can seltzer water cause kidney stones?

My husband has a history of kidney stones, and he loves drinking seltzer water instead of plain water. I'm worried it might contribute to his kidney stone problem. Can seltzer water actually cause kidney stones?

Seltzer water is carbonated and some brands have sodium which could theoretically increase calcium excretion. But there is no strong medical proof linking plain seltzer directly to kidney stones. If you have a family history of stones, it's best to consult a urologist about your specific diet.

Beta, please don't drink too much of these bubbly drinks. Plain clean matka water is best for health. If you feel any pain in your back or sides, immediately go to a doctor in town.

Unless you are bathing in seltzer water and drinking only carbonation daily, you are totally fine! Normal water is still the king of hydration though, so maybe don't make seltzer your entire personality.

Because of my thyroid issues I get my blood and urine tests done every six months to monitor mineral levels. Seltzer has never caused me issues, but if you are prone to stones, regular lab tests and showing them to your doctor is the safest way to know.
