Can scratching your scalp cause hair loss?

I've been struggling with a very itchy scalp for the past few months. I scratch it without even realizing sometimes, and now I'm noticing a lot more hair in my comb. Could scratching actually be causing this hair loss?

I used to scratch my scalp till it bled because of severe dandruff, and my hair started thinning so fast. Applying freshly extracted aloe vera gel really helped cool down the itching. But please make sure you don't use long nails, as it just worsens the damage to your roots.

Yes, it certainly can. When you scratch aggressively, you damage the outer protective layer of the hair shaft and can even injure the hair follicles. It is always better to address the underlying itchiness, whether it is dandruff or dryness, with the help of a dermatologist.

Yeah, it does. I used to scratch my scalp a lot when playing sports in the heat, and my hair fall increased. My doc told me the physical friction was literally pulling the hair out. Stopped doing it and switched to a cooling shampoo, and it got much better.

My son had a severe habit of scratching his head due to a fungal infection, and we noticed small bald-looking patches. We immediately took him to a skin specialist who gave him a medicated shampoo. Parents should monitor this closely because kids can scratch very harshly without realizing.

Stress can cause both high BP and scalp itching, which leads to scratching and hair fall. I have realized that keeping a calm mind and getting regular health checkups is key. If you are scratching a lot, go see a dermatologist rather than ignoring it.

I dealt with this issue for a year. Scratching causes micro-inflammation on the scalp, which temporarily shuts down hair growth. My advice is to keep your nails short, avoid hot water head baths, and get a proper medical lotion to stop the itch.

Let's be real, scratching destroys your hair follicles. If you have an itchy scalp, sitting and scratching it is only going to make you bald faster. Stop trying random hacks and book an appointment with a good dermatologist to fix the root cause.

Sweat from my daily running used to make my scalp itch like crazy, and scratching was ruining my hair density. I started washing my hair with plain water right after my workouts to clear the sweat. Keeping active is great, but maintaining scalp hygiene post-exercise is just as important.

It is so depressing to see chunks of hair come out just because you couldn't control the urge to scratch. I used to cry looking at the hair on my pillow. Please don't be hard on yourself, the hair usually grows back once the scalp heals. Seek professional help to soothe the itch.

If you treat your scalp like a lottery scratch card, your hair is definitely going to say goodbye! Jokes aside, yes, aggressive scratching weakens the roots. Give your nails a holiday and let a dermatologist figure out why your head is itching so much.
