Can radiotherapy cause hair loss?

My aunt is about to start radiotherapy for her cancer, and she's very worried about the side effects. She's particularly concerned about her hair. Does radiotherapy usually cause hair loss, and if so, is it permanent?

Honestly, I can barely keep track of my own receding hairline with 4 hours of sleep, but from what I know, radiotherapy only causes hair loss on the specific part of the body being treated. If they are radiating the head, then yes, but not if it is on the chest or stomach. Unlike chemo which makes you lose hair everywhere, this is very localized.

I was actually reading up on this yesterday because my aunt is undergoing treatment. It seems hair loss only happens where the radiation beams actually enter the body. So if someone is getting radiation for breast cancer, they won't lose hair on their head. It is quite different from chemotherapy that way!

Yes, but only in the area where the radiation is targeted. Still, skin reactions and other side effects can also happen, so please check with the radiation oncologist before starting. They can guide you best on what to expect for your specific treatment plan.

It depends entirely on the area being treated, so hair loss is local. While undergoing such heavy therapy, eating nutrient-rich food like sprouts, almonds, and green veggies is very important to help the skin and body heal. Do consult your dietician at the hospital for a proper recovery diet chart.

Don't let this worry you, kiddo. Hair loss from radiotherapy only happens in the specific spot being treated, not your whole head unless the radiation is on the head itself. Even then, it is temporary and it eventually comes back. Just focus on your rest and recovery right now, we are all here for you.

I get so anxious just thinking about these treatments! But yes, like others said, it only affects the hair in the direct path of the radiation beam. Don't worry too much, the hair usually grows back after the treatment ends. Sending you lots of strength, you will get through this.
