Can pregnancy cause migraine headaches?

I've been suffering from really bad, throbbing headaches with sensitivity to light and sound since I got pregnant. My sister gets migraines and said mine sound similar. Can pregnancy cause new migraine headaches?

Yes, migraine attacks can definitely flare up during pregnancy due to the heavy estrogen fluctuations. I had to strictly avoid triggers like bright lights and loud sounds, and used a cold gel pack on my neck. Never take any OTC migraine pills without your doctor's green light.

I totally get it, dealing with throbbing migraine pain when you are already dealing with pregnancy nausea is just exhausting. Please rest in a dark, quiet room and try to sip some warm ginger water. Definitely let your doctor know about this.

My sister used to get terrible migraine attacks during her first trimester and she couldn't take her normal medicines. She said her doctor advised her to sleep in a completely dark room and keep her screen time to a minimum.

While migraines are common due to hormonal spikes, a sudden severe headache can also indicate blood pressure changes. It is extremely important to get this checked by your OB-GYN to rule out any complications and get safe prescription options.

I panicked so much when I had a severe migraine in my second month, worrying it would harm the baby or that I couldn't take any medicine. But my doctor reassured me it is very common and gave me a pregnancy-safe pain reliever. It got much better after the first trimester.

Hormones are a big trigger for migraines during this phase. If your gynecologist says it is okay, gentle stretches or a light walk in the fresh air can sometimes help relieve the tension. Ensure your hydration is on point and seek your doctor's advice.
