Can prednisone cause liver damage?

My doctor gave me prednisone for my autoimmune flare-up. I'm generally worried about my liver health. Can this medicine cause damage to the liver?

Yes, prednisone can affect your liver, especially if you already have issues like fatty liver or high blood pressure like I do. It is extremely important to monitor your liver enzymes (SGOT/SGPT) and keep your lifestyle clean by avoiding oily food and alcohol.

Do not rely on home-cooked remedies or herbal tonics to 'detox' your liver while on prednisone, as they can interact badly with the steroid. If you suspect liver issues, only trust a clinical Liver Function Test (LFT) and consult your prescribing doctor.

While prednisone can cause liver issues, don't run to expensive diagnostic chains for fancy packages. Just go to your local lab and get a basic Liver Function Test (LFT) done, which costs only around 300-400 rupees, to see where your enzymes stand.

Please be very careful with this. I had severe liver enzyme spikes and jaundice-like symptoms when my steroid dose was too high, which led to many complications. Do not ignore any signs of fatigue or dark urine, and go see your gastroenterologist immediately.

I know how terrifying it is to search for drug side effects and feel like your organs are failing. Your anxiety is completely normal because prednisone is a very potent drug. Just know that severe liver damage is rare, but getting regular blood tests will help ease your mind.

I totally get it, worrying about liver damage while already taking heavy meds can make you feel so helpless. Prednisone can sometimes raise liver enzymes, but it's usually manageable. Try to speak with your doctor so they can reassure you and guide you properly.

At this age, even drinking water sometimes feels like it damages my organs, haha! But yes, prednisone is a heavy steroid and processed by the liver, so it can cause some strain. Just don't overload yourself with extra junk food while on it.

My husband had some liver warmth and high SGPT due to steroids last year. Along with his doctor's advice, drinking warm water with a bit of amla juice in the morning and eating light khichdi helped ease his digestion. Do take care of your diet during this time.
