Can my primary doctor prescribe me weight loss pills?

I've been struggling with my weight for years now, and diet and exercise alone haven't been enough. Can my general physician, my primary doctor, prescribe me some weight loss pills or medication if needed?

Yes, a general physician can prescribe them if your BMI is above a certain limit or if you have co-morbidities. My doctor explained that they only prescribe approved meds like Orlistat after doing liver and kidney panel tests to ensure it's safe.

They can, but honestly, pills won't stop you from craving those weekend butter chickens! If you want to go the medical route, your doc can give a prescription, but we still have to control our sweet tooth. It's a hard battle!

They can prescribe them, but if you have underlying issues like thyroid, weight gain is managed differently. Please get your TSH and other hormone levels tested first so your doctor can treat the root cause rather than just giving weight loss pills.

I didn't know general doctors could do that, I thought we had to see a big specialist. Does anyone know if these pills have bad side effects like stomach pain? I am a bit scared to ask my family doctor about this.

Haan na, they can definitely write a prescription if you ask them. But it's always better to ask if it's really necessary or if we can manage with simple diet changes first. Doc will guide you best anyway.

Yes, they can, but don't expect a magic pill. I took prescribed weight loss pills once, and they only work if you strictly combine them with calorie control and exercise. Make sure your doctor monitors your blood pressure regularly while you are on them.
