Can mayonnaise be eaten during pregnancy?

Being pregnant, I'm really craving sandwiches with mayo these days. My mother-in-law warned me against eating it, saying it's not safe during pregnancy. I wanted to know if mayonnaise is actually okay to consume or if there are certain types to avoid.

Yes, but only if it is commercially made and pasteurized! Most store-bought ones in India like Dr. Oetker or Funfoods are perfectly safe because they don't use raw eggs. Just avoid homemade ones at cafes where raw eggs might be used.

Beti, in our times we didn't eat these heavy bottled sauces during pregnancy. It is always better to eat fresh ghar ka khana and simple homemade chutneys. If you really crave it, have a very small spoon of a trusted brand, but don't make it a habit.

My mother-in-law advised me to stay away from all outside sauces, but my doctor cleared it up. She said bottled, pasteurized mayonnaise from the supermarket is fine, but strictly avoid fresh homemade mayonnaise at restaurants due to the risk of salmonella.

Commercial mayo is totally fine as it uses pasteurized ingredients. Just read the label to check if it's eggless or pasteurized. Absolutely skip the homemade versions at local sandwich stalls though, it's not worth the risk.

Don't stress, you can satisfy your cravings! Just ensure you are buying regular eggless mayo or pasteurized bottled ones from a good grocery store. Avoid street food stalls where they keep mayo in the open for hours.

Checked this on my pregnancy tracker app last week for my wife. Standard pasteurized or eggless mayonnaise from the market is safe, but it is very high in empty calories and fats. Keep an eye on the portion size to avoid unnecessary weight spikes.

I had intense mayo cravings during my pregnancy last year. I spoke to my gynaecologist and she told me eggless supermarket mayo is 100% safe. I ate it regularly in my sandwiches and had a completely healthy delivery.
