Can magnesium cause kidney damage?

My doctor recently recommended magnesium supplements for my muscle cramps. However, my uncle has kidney issues, and I know some medicines can affect the kidneys. Is magnesium safe for kidney health, or can it cause damage?

Totally agree with the others. Magnesium is safe for healthy people, but if you already have kidney issues, your body can't filter it out, which is risky.

Listen, don't worry unnecessarily. If your kidneys are perfectly healthy, taking normal amounts of magnesium won't cause any damage. But if there is any pre-existing kidney issue, even a small dose can build up, so please get a simple blood test done first.

I have been managing high BP for ten years and my doctor always monitors my kidney function. He told me to never self-prescribe magnesium because excess can strain the kidneys when you have BP issues. Better to get your creatinine levels checked first.

Rather than popping magnesium pills which can burden your system, why not get it naturally? Green leafy vegetables, almonds, and pumpkin seeds are excellent vegetarian sources. Your body processes these natural foods much better without risking kidney strain.

Since I have diabetes, I am always careful about kidney health because diabetic nephropathy is a real risk. My doctor strictly told me to avoid random magnesium supplements as they can build up if filtration is slow. Please consult a doctor before starting anything.

Actually, magnesium itself doesn't cause kidney damage in healthy individuals. The issue is that kidneys are responsible for clearing out excess magnesium, so if they are already weak, magnesium levels can shoot up dangerously. Always check your eGFR levels before starting heavy doses.

Aise hi bina doctor se pooche supplements mat khao, paisa bhi kharab hota hai aur sehat bhi. If you really think you need magnesium, just do a basic kidney function test at any local lab for 400-500 rupees, show it to a doc, and then start.
