Can lap band surgery cause thyroid issues?

Thinking about getting lap band surgery for weight loss, I'm doing a lot of research on potential side effects. I read somewhere that it might affect thyroid function. Can lap band surgery actually cause thyroid issues?

While lap band surgery doesn't directly damage the thyroid gland, the sudden massive weight loss and nutritional changes can definitely affect your hormone levels. Having managed thyroid issues myself, I highly suggest getting regular thyroid panel tests done post-surgery to monitor any fluctuations.

I know how incredibly stressful it is to worry about hormonal imbalances after a major surgery like lap band. Your feelings are completely valid because any major physical change can throw the body out of sync. Please discuss this with your surgeon to ease your mind.

I was actually considering looking into weight loss surgeries, so this is a bit scary to hear. Does lap band surgery really affect your hormones that much? Should one get their thyroid checked before even planning the surgery?

Hey, don't stress too much about this! Lap band surgery is a mechanical procedure on your stomach, so it doesn't directly cause thyroid disease. Just make sure you are taking all your prescribed vitamins because nutrient deficiencies can sometimes mimic thyroid symptoms. You've got this!

My uncle had a lap band done a few years ago. He had some fatigue issues later, but his doctor said it was just B12 and iron deficiency from eating less, not a thyroid problem. Just keep up with your follow-up tests and you should be totally fine.
