Can kidney issues cause weight gain?

I've noticed a significant weight gain recently, especially around my waist, and I've also been told I have some kidney function issues. I'm trying to understand if these two things are connected. Could my kidney issues be causing this weight gain?

Yes, and it is so emotionally draining when you see the scale go up even when you aren't eating much. It's usually water weight (fluid retention) because the kidneys aren't filtering properly. Please don't beat yourself up over it, it is a medical symptom and not your fault.

Yes, kidney issues lead to fluid retention, which can cause sudden weight gain and swelling in the legs or face. Keep a track of your daily weight and report sudden changes to your doctor.

I am new here and my father has suddenly gained 3 kgs in just one week, mostly showing as puffiness around his face and ankles. Could this be fluid retention from his kidneys, and should we see a doctor immediately?

Actually yaar, it is mostly fluid retention rather than actual fat gain. When kidneys struggle, they hold onto water and sodium, which makes you look bloated and increases weight. Definitely get a doctor to check it out before it increases.

If you are noticing sudden weight gain, it could be fluid buildup due to kidney issues. I suggest getting a basic Kidney Function Test (KFT) done first; you can easily compare prices online to find a lab that offers it at a reasonable rate before visiting the doctor.
