Can joint inflammation cause weight gain?

Suffering from chronic joint inflammation often limits my activity. I've noticed that I've been steadily gaining weight over the past year, despite trying to be careful with my diet. Can joint inflammation itself be a reason for weight gain?

Joint inflammation itself doesn't directly add fat, but it restricts your movement, which can lead to weight gain. I have thyroid issues and face joint pain often, so I always get my thyroid and inflammatory markers checked regularly. Please consult your doctor for a proper blood workup.

Actually, when my knees hurt from inflammation, I just sit on the couch and order comfort food like pizza or burgers. That lack of movement combined with stress-eating definitely causes weight gain! It's a tough cycle to break when you can't move around easily.

Yeah totally, when my joints flare up, I can't even play football or go to the gym, so I just end up gaining weight sitting at home. It really sucks because you feel bloated and stiff all the time. Best to eat light when you can't work out.

I have been noticing my ankles swelling up and my weight has gone up by 3 kilos suddenly. Is this weight gain just water retention from the inflammation, or is it real weight? I am quite worried and don't know what to do.

Beta, when the joints are swollen, we cannot walk and the body becomes heavy. Drink warm turmeric milk daily as it naturally reduces the swelling in your joints. Try to eat light, home-cooked meals so you don't put extra load on your knees.

Chronic inflammation in the body increases cortisol levels, which is a major reason for fat storage and weight gain. Also, medications like steroids prescribed for joint pain are notorious for causing weight gain and water retention. Speak to your doctor about managing these side effects.
