I was actually researching this online because a friend of mine has to get this surgery done and he was super freaked out about this. From what I read, true erectile dysfunction after this surgery is extremely rare because the nerves responsible are in a different area. It's mostly just temporary swelling or fear of pain.

While the medical literature suggests that the risk of permanent erectile dysfunction after an inguinal hernia repair is incredibly low, you must discuss your concerns openly with your surgeon. If you experience any long-term numbness or issues post-surgery, please get it evaluated immediately to rule out any nerve irritation.

I had some severe swelling and nerve pain after my hernia mesh placement, which made things difficult for a few months. While it wasn't permanent ED, the recovery was quite tough because of the inflammation. I highly recommend choosing an experienced surgeon and reporting any unusual pain or numbness right away.

My uncle was very hesitant about his hernia surgery due to similar worries, and our elders suggested some traditional rest routines, but we consulted a urologist just to be sure. The doctor explained that temporary bruising can cause mild discomfort initially, but it doesn't affect long-term function. He got the surgery and is doing completely fine now.

Beta, I had my inguinal hernia surgery done almost fifteen years ago, and I had the exact same fear back then. Let me reassure you, everything returned to absolutely normal once the initial healing period of a few weeks passed. Just trust your doctor and give your body some time to heal.

Don't let these fears delay your surgery, as a neglected hernia can lead to expensive emergency hospital visits later. Choose a good surgeon within your insurance network and ask them about laparoscopic options, which usually have fewer complications and a faster recovery. Planning it properly will save you money and mental peace.
