Can i drink water before liver ultrasound?
I have a liver ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow morning. I usually drink water first thing after waking up. Is it okay to drink water before a liver ultrasound, or should I fast completely?

When I had my scan, they told me to remain fasting for 6 hours, which meant no water too if possible, or just very tiny sips if extremely thirsty. Since I have PCOS, I always double-check fasting instructions with the lab beforehand just to be safe.
Please call your clinic and ask them exactly what to do. I once ignored the fasting instructions and had water before my scan, and they had to reschedule the whole thing because the liver views weren't clear. Save yourself the trouble and check.
My elders told me drinking water is fine, but the diagnostic center doctor specifically asked me not to drink water or eat anything for 6 hours prior to the liver scan. It helps them get a clear view of the gallbladder, so please follow the doctor's lab instructions carefully.
For a liver and upper abdomen ultrasound, fasting is usually required for about 6 to 8 hours. Drinking too much water can contract the gallbladder, making it hard to see clearly. Best to avoid water unless the technician has told you otherwise.
Actually, my radiologist explained that fasting, including no water, is necessary because drinking can cause the gallbladder to empty, which blocks the view of the liver area. They told me small sips of plain water are okay if you have to take essential medication, but nothing more.

Generally, you need an empty stomach for a liver ultrasound. Drinking water can introduce air bubbles into your digestive system, which interferes with the ultrasound waves. Try to finish your last sip at least 4-6 hours before the appointment.
I have my liver scan tomorrow morning and I am so thirsty. Is it really bad if I drink a small glass of water now? I am worried they will reject my scan if I do. Has anyone else faced this?
