Can hip bursitis cause knee pain?

My doctor thinks I might have hip bursitis from playing football. Since then, I've also developed some discomfort in my knee on the same side. Is it possible for them to be linked?

Yes, it can. I panicked so much last year thinking my knee joint was failing because of the radiating pain from my hip. My doctor reassured me that hip bursitis often sends pain down the thigh to the knee, and it's completely normal for these joints to affect each other. It got much better with physical therapy.

Honestly, walking to my favorite street food stalls became a task because my hip bursitis started making my knee throb too! Since the hip and knee are connected by big muscles, one bad joint messes up the other. Best to rest it so you can get back to enjoying your food walks.

I was just reading up on this because my uncle has trochanteric bursitis and keeps complaining about knee stiffness. Apparently, the IT band runs from the hip to the knee, so inflammation at the top can easily pull and cause pain down at the knee. It's crazy how everything is connected!

Yes, hip pain can travel down to the knee. Applying an ice pack on the outer hip for 15 minutes daily helped me reduce the swelling naturally. However, if the pain makes it hard to stand or walk, please don't rely only on home remedies and visit an orthopedic doctor.

Yes, referred pain down the leg is very common with bursitis. Try to avoid sleeping directly on the painful hip as that makes the knee pain worse too.

I totally get it, dealing with pain in both the hip and the knee makes even simple daily movements feel like a chore. The hip inflammation can easily affect your posture and strain your knee. Please take it easy and get proper advice from a doctor to help you heal.
