Can hashimoto's cause weight gain?

I've been gaining weight steadily for the past year despite trying to eat healthy and exercise regularly. My doctor is checking for thyroid issues, and I heard about Hashimoto's; can it be the reason for this unexplained weight gain?

Yes, since Hashimoto's leads to hypothyroidism, it slows down your metabolism and causes weight gain. Just like managing my diabetes, you have to be very careful with your diet—focus on fiber, cut down on processed sugar, and work closely with your doctor.

I have helped many people on this forum dealing with Hashimoto's. Weight gain is actually one of the most common symptoms because the thyroid gland becomes underactive. Be patient with your body, take your thyroid hormone medication on time every morning, and walk daily.

Absolutely, it slows your metabolism severely. Focus on clean, anti-inflammatory vegetarian foods like leafy greens, whole grains, and healthy fats, while avoiding too much soy or gluten if you feel bloated. A disciplined diet along with your doctor's advice is key.

I know how stressful it is to see the scale go up for no reason, it can honestly make you feel so anxious and helpless. Please don't blame yourself; this is a medical condition and not a lack of willpower. Take a deep breath and consult an endocrinologist to get your medication sorted.

Yes, weight gain is a classic sign of Hashimoto's. The most important thing is to get your TSH, Free T3, and Free T4 tested every few months. Your doctor needs to adjust your dosage based on these reports, otherwise the weight won't budge.

I totally feel you, I put on almost 8 kgs before I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. It felt so frustrating because I was eating normally but still ballooning. Once my doctor put me on the right dose of thyroxine, my weight slowly started stabilizing.
