Can gastroparesis cause weight gain?

I was recently diagnosed with gastroparesis, and I expected to lose weight because of it, but instead, I've actually gained a couple of kilos. My doctor said it's unusual. Can gastroparesis sometimes lead to weight gain, or am I misunderstanding something?

While gastroparesis typically causes weight loss due to delayed stomach emptying and vomiting, some individuals might experience weight gain. This can happen if they rely mostly on easily digestible, high-calorie liquid foods or simple carbs to cope with the symptoms. A consultation with a gastroenterologist and a clinical nutritionist is highly recommended to manage this.

Yes, gastroparesis can sometimes lead to unexpected weight gain because the body's metabolism changes and the foods we can tolerate are often different. It can be quite frustrating to deal with. Please consult your doctor to find a safe way to manage your diet.

Yes, it actually can happen if you are consuming mostly liquid diets or high-carb soft foods to avoid pain. Definitely consult your specialist about this.

I struggled so much emotionally when my stomach wouldn't empty properly, and yet I was somehow gaining weight because I could only digest simple, high-calorie starches. It felt so unfair and isolating when everyone assumed gastroparesis only causes weight loss. Please know you are not alone, and it's best to seek guidance from a caring doctor.

Actually, yes. When the stomach empties too slowly, patients often shift to soft foods, juices, or shakes which can be surprisingly calorie-dense, leading to weight gain despite bloating. Make sure you discuss this with your physician so they can adjust your treatment and diet plan safely.

I panicked so much when my weight went up instead of down after my diagnosis, thinking something was seriously wrong with my metabolism. But my doctor reassured me that changing to soft, low-fiber foods often causes this temporary shift. It is quite common, so try not to worry and just follow your doctor's advice.
