Can drinking water on empty stomach cause vomiting?

I heard that drinking a lot of water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach is very healthy. However, sometimes when I try this, I feel a bit nauseous or even like vomiting. Is it possible for drinking water this way to cause such a reaction?

I recently started drinking a warm glass of water every morning on an empty stomach because everyone says it is healthy, but it makes me feel really nauseous and like vomiting. Am I doing something wrong, or is this reaction normal for some people?

Yes, this actually happens to quite a few people, especially if they gulp down a large amount of water too quickly in the morning. Try sipping the water slowly while sitting down, rather than standing and chugging it. If the nausea persists, it is best to check if you have underlying acidity or reflux.

In yoga, we practice Usha Pana, which is drinking water at dawn, but it must be done with mindfulness. Gulping cold water too fast can disturb the digestive fire (Jatharagni) and cause a mild vomiting sensation. Try sipping lukewarm water slowly while sitting quietly, which is much more gentle on the stomach.

With my PCOS, I deal with occasional morning nausea and acid reflux, and drinking a lot of water on an empty stomach sometimes triggers a gag reflex. I've found that squeezing a tiny bit of fresh lemon juice or adding a slice of ginger helps settle my stomach. Maybe try that, but do listen to your body and don't force it.

Haan na, even I feel like vomiting if I drink too much water first thing in the morning. My mother told me to sit and drink it sip-by-sip instead of standing and gulping. Doing that actually helped me, so maybe you can try it too.

I used to suffer from morning vomiting sensations every time I drank water on an empty stomach, and I realized it was because of silent acid reflux. I started taking dinner a bit early and switched to drinking room-temperature water instead of cold water in the morning, and the nausea completely stopped.

A sudden volume of water can distend the stomach and trigger a vomiting reflex, especially if you suffer from conditions like GERD or gastritis. While minor adjustments like sipping slowly can help, persistent vomiting is not something to ignore. If it keeps happening, consulting a gastroenterologist is your best course of action.

Between busy mornings, we often rush through our routines, but chugging a huge bottle of water right after waking up can shock an empty stomach and cause nausea. A quick fix is to stick to just half a cup of lukewarm water first, and then drink more after 15-20 minutes once your body wakes up.
