Can drinking more water cause weight gain?

For hydration and general health, I've increased my water intake significantly. However, a few friends at work were discussing how drinking *too much* water can sometimes lead to water retention and even weight gain. Could this be true?

I used to panic so much when the weighing scale went up by a kilo after I started drinking 3 liters of water. But then I realized it is just temporary water weight and completely normal. Don't worry at all, your body is just adjusting and it actually helps with fat loss in the long run.

Unless you are holding all that water in your mouth without swallowing, it is not going to make you permanently fat! It is just temporary weight, my friend. Go to the bathroom a couple of times and you will see that 'weight gain' disappear instantly.

I completely understand how stressful it feels when you are trying to be healthy and the scale shows a higher number instead. It really triggers anxiety, but please be assured that water has zero calories and cannot cause fat gain. Your anxiety is just making you overthink a very healthy habit.

My grandmother used to say that water cleanses all impurities from the system, so we should never fear it. Our family physician also confirmed that drinking more water actually improves digestion and metabolism. Do not worry about the scale, just trust that staying hydrated is good for you.

I faced this exact confusion when I started my fitness journey. When you increase water intake, your body might temporarily retain some fluid if your salt intake is high. Just reduce processed food and pickles, keep drinking your water, and the bloating will go away in a few days.

There is a lot of misinformation online about water weight and metabolism. While normal hydration is healthy, sudden and significant weight gain or swelling after drinking water can point to kidney or heart issues. Don't rely on forum advice; if you notice persistent bloating, consult a medical doctor for proper tests.
