Can drinking hard water cause kidney stones?

We recently moved to an area where the tap water is known to be quite hard. My in-laws keep warning me that drinking hard water can cause kidney stones. Is there really a risk involved, or is it just an old wives' tale?

I lived in an area with very hard water and got kidney stones twice. The doctor told me that while hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium contribute, the main culprit is simply not drinking enough total water. Install a good RO filter to soften the water and drink at least 3 liters daily.

While hard water has high mineral content, dietary factors like eating too many high-oxalate foods like spinach and tomatoes also play a big role in calcium stones. Try to balance your vegetarian diet with plenty of citrus fruits like lemons. Always make sure your drinking water is properly filtered.

I was researching this because the groundwater in my society is very salty and hard. Actually, most research says there isn't a direct direct link between hard water and kidney stones, but it can still affect your digestion and hair. It's probably safer to stick to purified water anyway.

The borewell water in our new apartment is super hard and leaves white marks on all our utensils. I am constantly worried that those same minerals are building up inside my kidneys to form stones. Does anyone else living in high-rise buildings worry about this too?

Please do not ignore this. I used to drink hard tap water thinking nothing would happen, ignoring a dull ache in my side for months until I ended up in the emergency room with severe, unbearable pain. If you feel any lower back pain or burning during urination, get an ultrasound done immediately.

Don't stress yourself out too much, dear. Yes, hard water has high calcium, but our bodies are designed to filter out excess minerals if we stay well hydrated. Just make sure you are using a working water purifier at home and keep sipping water throughout the day. You'll be absolutely fine.

Dealing with the fear of kidney stones is incredibly draining, especially when you can see the hard water scaling on your taps every day. I went through that constant anxiety myself, always checking my urine color and feeling scared. Getting a water softener for our kitchen really helped ease my mind.
