Can diabetics eat sugar alcohol?

I see many 'sugar-free' products in the market that contain something called 'sugar alcohol'. I'm trying to manage my sugar levels better. Are these sugar alcohols safe for diabetics, and do they affect blood sugar like regular sugar?

Yeah, they are mostly fine! I bought some sugar-free chocolates with erythritol for my dad, and his sugar didn't spike at all. Just don't eat too much or it can upset your stomach.

I was researching about sweeteners like maltitol and sorbitol. Apparently, some sugar alcohols do raise blood glucose slightly, while others like erythritol have zero effect. It is actually quite interesting to compare them.

Please be very careful with sugar alcohols as they can sometimes cause bloating and digestive issues too. It is always safer to check with your doctor to see if they are suitable for your health.

Don't blindly trust labels that say 'sugar-free' just because they use sugar alcohols. Some of these can still raise your glucose levels. You should definitely discuss this with your doctor before eating them regularly.

Erythritol and xylitol are pretty popular sugar alcohols that are keto-friendly and great for diabetics. I track my food daily and find that they have a very minimal glycemic impact compared to normal sugar.
