Can depression cause weight gain without overeating?

Feeling very low and lethargic for months, which I think is depression. The problem is I've also put on a lot of weight, but honestly, I haven't been eating more than usual. Is it possible for depression to cause weight gain even if you're not overeating?

Yes, it can, and please don't let anyone make you feel like you are just being lazy. Chronic stress increases cortisol levels, which physically changes how your body stores fat even if your diet is normal. Please be gentle with yourself, you are doing your best.

Haan yaar, bilkul hota hai. Jab dimaag me heavy stress hota hai na, toh body ka metabolism poora slow ho jata hai. Tum bina jyada khaye bhi weight gain karne lagte ho, isme tumhari koi galti nahi hai.

I went through this exact same thing last year where my weight kept creeping up despite barely eating anything. It was so frustrating! Once I started dealing with my mental health and got my hormones checked, my body finally went back to normal.

I know how stressful it is to see the scale go up when you aren't even eating much, it makes you feel so powerless and anxious. It is a very real physiological response to depression due to metabolic slowdown, so please know your feelings and worries are completely valid.

Please go get your thyroid levels checked immediately. I blamed my weight gain entirely on my depression and stress, only to find out months later that I had a severe thyroid issue that was also causing my low mood. Don't ignore these physical signs.
