Can depression cause weight gain?

Been feeling really low and unmotivated for a few months now, and I've also gained quite a bit of weight. I used to be so active. Is there a connection between feeling depressed and this weight gain, or am I just eating too much because I'm sad?

Yes, it absolutely can. When my mood was very low, I tried so many herbal teas and powders to lose weight, but nothing worked because my stress was too high. The best remedy is to first heal your mind, start with short daily walks, and eat warm, home-cooked food.

My dear, depression can slow down your metabolism and often causes us to seek comfort in sweet foods. Some medications for depression can also contribute to weight gain. Please do not feel guilty about it; focus on your mental peace first and the rest will follow.

Please get a complete thyroid and hormonal panel done. I ignored my sudden weight gain thinking it was just laziness from my depression, but it turned out to be severe hypothyroidism. Getting checked early will save you a lot of health complications.

Yes, high levels of cortisol from chronic depression cause your body to store more fat, especially around the belly. Tracking my daily activity and sleep quality on my fitness app helped me realize how much my physical movement dropped when my mood was low.

Hey, please don't stress too much about the weight gain right now! Your body is just trying to cope with a very heavy emotional load. Just focus on feeling better mentally, and your physical health will get back on track slowly.

It is a very common side effect, both due to metabolic changes and certain anti-depressants. If you have recently started any medication, do discuss this with your doctor so they can adjust the dosage or suggest alternatives if needed.
