Can cough syrup be taken during pregnancy?

Currently in my second trimester, I've caught a bad cold, with a lot of coughing. I really want to take some cough syrup to get relief, but my mother-in-law said it might not be safe for the baby. Can I actually take cough syrup during pregnancy, or should I avoid it completely?

In my days, we strictly avoided modern cough syrups during pregnancy because many have alcohol or strong sedatives. We relied on warm milk with turmeric and ginger. It is always safest to ask your gynecologist before taking even one spoon of syrup.

My wife had a terrible cough when she was pregnant, and her food cravings made it so tricky because she only wanted spicy chaat which made her throat worse! Her doctor strictly said no over-the-counter syrups and gave a safe, specific one. Check with your doc first!

Pregnancy is such a delicate phase, and from what I have learned through my own health journey, you shouldn't take any self-medication. Many cough syrups contain ingredients that might not be safe for the baby. Please consult your gynecologist to get a safe prescription.

Don't take any random cough syrup right now, okay? Some of them have active ingredients that are not recommended during pregnancy. Just give your gynecologist a quick call, they will tell you exactly which brand is safe for you and the baby.

Please do not self-medicate during pregnancy. My wife once took a common cold tablet thinking it was harmless, and we had a major scare later. Always get every single medicine approved by your doctor first, even basic cough syrups.

Many standard cough syrups are loaded with sugar, which can cause sudden spikes in your blood glucose levels—especially crucial if you have gestational diabetes. You must consult your doctor to get a sugar-free, pregnancy-safe alternative.

I totally get it, coughing constantly when you are pregnant is so exhausting and uncomfortable. But please hold off on the OTC cough syrups. Call your doctor's clinic, they can easily recommend a pregnancy-safe option over the phone.
