Can celiac cause weight gain?

Ever since I got diagnosed with Celiac disease and started eating gluten-free, I've actually put on some weight, which was unexpected. I thought avoiding gluten might help me stay lean. Can celiac disease sometimes lead to weight gain?

I actually gained about 5 kgs after starting my gluten-free diet and it is making me super anxious. Has anyone else experienced sudden weight gain after their celiac diagnosis? I am worried if I am doing something wrong.

Bro, yes, it can. Everyone thinks celiac means losing weight, but when I started healing on a gluten-free diet, my body actually started absorbing nutrients properly and I gained some weight. It's quite normal once your gut fixes itself.

Clinical studies show that a significant percentage of celiac patients are actually overweight at diagnosis, or gain weight after starting a gluten-free diet due to improved villous absorption. My doctor explained that packaged gluten-free foods are often high in fats and sugars, which also contributes to weight gain.

Beta, when the body recovers from a long illness, it is natural for the weight to fluctuate. Eating simple, easily digestible foods like cooked khichdi and maintaining light physical activity will help keep your weight in check. Always let your doctor guide you.

My luck is so great that even with a disease that usually makes people thin, I managed to gain weight! Jokes aside, once the gut starts absorbing everything properly, those extra calories finally stick. Just keep an eye on your diet and talk to your doc.

I tried all kinds of herbal teas and home remedies to control my bloating and weight, but nothing worked until I understood celiac properly. Sometimes the body holds onto weight due to chronic inflammation. Focus on healing your gut with clean, homemade gluten-free food.

I was totally freaked out when my weight went up after going gluten-free, but my doctor reassured me it's just my intestines finally absorbing food after years of damage. It is completely normal and your weight will eventually stabilize, so don't worry.

If you are gaining weight on a gluten-free diet, check what you are buying. Many store-bought gluten-free breads and biscuits are packed with extra starch and sugar. Stick to simple, naturally gluten-free Indian meals like rice, dal, and fresh vegetables to keep it practical.

I am just researching this topic because my cousin was recently diagnosed with celiac and she has been gaining weight instead of losing it. It's really interesting to see that gut healing can actually lead to weight gain for some people.

While weight gain can occur as your small intestine recovers and absorbs nutrients more efficiently, it's essential to monitor this change. It is best to consult both your gastroenterologist and a qualified clinical nutritionist to ensure your gluten-free diet is balanced and healthy.
