Can bariatric surgery cure diabetes?

Struggling with type 2 diabetes and my doctor mentioned bariatric surgery as an option for weight loss. Heard some people say it can even cure diabetes. Is it true that bariatric surgery can lead to a full remission of diabetes?

While it can put Type 2 diabetes into long-term remission, it's not a magical permanent cure. You still have to maintain a clean diet and consistent exercise routine post-surgery to keep the sugar levels stable. It is a tool, but your daily habits are what keep you healthy.

My uncle had this surgery done at a very reputed hospital in Chennai and his diabetes actually went into complete remission within months. But the surgeons there were very clear that results vary from patient to patient. You should consult a top bariatric specialist to understand your specific eligibility.

Bariatric surgery has been shown to highly improve or even reverse Type 2 diabetes in obese individuals, primarily due to hormonal changes and rapid weight loss. However, calling it a 'cure' can be misleading as recurrence is possible. A thorough consultation with an endocrinologist and a bariatric surgeon is essential.

Let's be direct—it can reverse Type 2 diabetes, but it is a major surgery with life-long lifestyle changes. It is not an easy shortcut. If you are severely obese and struggle with uncontrolled sugar, discuss the pros and cons directly with a surgeon instead of guessing.

It can help reverse sugar levels, but the diet after bariatric surgery is extremely strict and limited. You have to be very careful about protein intake and nutrient absorption since the stomach size is reduced. Please consider if you can commit to such drastic dietary changes before taking any decision.

Dealing with metabolic health issues like thyroid and diabetes has taught me that there are no quick fixes. Even after any surgery, you will need regular blood tests and continuous medical follow-up to monitor your vitamin levels and endocrine health. Always stay in close touch with your doctor.
