Can bacterial overgrowth cause weight gain?

I've gained quite a bit of weight in the last year, and I'm not sure why. My friend mentioned something about bacterial overgrowth in the gut affecting weight. Can bacterial overgrowth actually lead to weight gain?

Yes, conditions like SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) can definitely lead to weight fluctuations, including gain. The bad bacteria can cause severe bloating, gas, and alter how your body absorbs nutrients. It is best to consult a gastroenterologist for a breath test.

Hey, don't stress too much about the scale right now! Gut issues can cause a lot of water retention and bloating, making you feel like you've put on weight when it's mostly just gas and inflammation. Focus on healing your gut with a doctor first.

I can only speak from my own experience, but when I had gut dysbiosis, I felt constantly bloated and put on a few kilos for no reason. Once my doctor treated the bacterial imbalance, my digestion improved and my weight went back to normal.

Managing my thyroid has taught me that gut health and hormones are deeply connected. Bacterial overgrowth can cause systemic inflammation, which slows down your metabolism. Please get a thyroid panel and gut checkup done together to see what is going on.

A SIBO breath test in good labs can be a bit expensive, starting around 3000 to 5000 rupees. I suggest visiting a government hospital gastroenterologist first to see if they can recommend cost-effective tests or starting a basic treatment plan based on your symptoms.

I dealt with SIBO last year and struggled with unexplained weight gain due to metabolic changes. My advice is to avoid self-diagnosing with random probiotics, as they can sometimes feed the bad bacteria. Get a proper hydrogen breath test done through a specialist.

If you suspect gut issues are affecting your weight, start by keeping a food diary to track what causes bloating. Avoid heavy, oily, and sugary foods for a few days, and make sure to consult a general physician for some basic stool and gut tests.

Bacterial imbalance in the stomach disturbs the digestive fire, or 'Agni', leading to sluggishness and weight gain. Along with the medical treatment your doctor prescribes, practicing gentle yoga like Pawanmuktasana and deep breathing can help restore abdominal harmony.
